THE TOP 5 REASONS TO INSTALL QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS IN YOUR KITCHEN OR BATH

The Top 5 Reasons to Install Quartz Countertops In Your Kitchen or Bath

REASON #1 MANUFACTURERS ARE VERY CONFIDENT AND PROVIDE EXTENSIVE WARRANTIES.  Manufacturers are very confident in the durability of their quartz countertops. They are so confident that they provide extensive warranties allowing the consumer to purchase with a fearless feeling of confidence. Unlike natural stone countertops like granite, marble or soapstone, quartz countertops are man-made. They are made when manufacturers grind particles of quartz into dust and combine the dust with other components like resin, and other synthetic materials.  This process binds the materials together making an extremely durable surface.  Pigments are then added to give the countertop color, while glass and other materials can be added to give the surface variety and depth.

REASON #2 QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS ARE SO VERY BEAUTIFUL AND BREATHTAKING!  Quartz Countertops are so very beautiful.  Many times, the average person cannot tell the difference from a natural stone like marble or granite. (see picture below)

REASON #3 QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS ARE NON-POROUS  Worrying about germs and bacteria is a thing of the past with quartz countertops!  Natural materials like marble are porous and can be a bed of bacteria especially in a kitchen, not to mention they can soak up stains and discolor the surface. Damage is almost always a part of surfaces like this. If you have a countertop like marble, you are required to seal them often.  On the other hand, quartz countertops are non-porous and actually deflect germs and bacteria.  You never have to seal them and they continually look beautiful year after year! In addition, quartz countertops are exceptionally resistant to staining. Because quartz countertops are non-porous, there is no way for liquid or chemicals to penetrate the surface area and cause staining.  With this being said, there are pigments used in quartz countertops that can react with certain chemicals causing discoloration or damage.  Be sure not to allow glue, bleach, oils, nail polish remover, paint or permanent markers near your quartz countertops.  Better safe than sorry.

REASON #4 QUARTZ IS VERY LOW-MAINTENANCE

Yes!!!! Quartz countertops have little to no maintenance! You don’t need to seal them or use any special kind of cleaner.  (Although many companies try to sell you special cleaning products that you just don’t need.) This means that you can enjoy your quartz and have a worry-free lifestyle.  Be aware though, a hot pan or coffee pot will scald and discolor your quartz countertops.  You will still need a rivet or oven mitt to set your hot pans on.  Do not put a scalding frying pan directly onto your quartz!

REASON #5 QUARTZ IS HIGHLY VERSATILE When purchasing a quartz product, the user (or designer) has more control of the continuous pattern.  Where to put the best part of the slab is no longer a worry.  Because quartz is a man-made material, each piece is the same.  That means that there won’t be a prettier part of the slab, than another area.  Let the uniformity be your friend!  There are even pieces of quartz that are made to be book-matched if desired!  Hello design Gods!!!

Overall, quartz is a great option for any room in the home.  There are some cons to the material though. You must be very careful of some of the marketing quartz manufacturers have out there on the internet.  One of the biggest inconveniences of quartz is the ability it has to be damaged from heat.  Some companies claim that it is heat resistant and consumers think that heat resistant means that you can put a hot frying pan on it.  This is not true.  Quartz can even be damaged from a toaster sitting on the counter or a crock pot being on for the day.  So, although it is so beautiful, so versatile, and so low maintenance, it is NOT without its flaws. If you are the type that just can’t resist putting your hot pan on it or your fresh baked bread directly onto the surface, then quartz is not for you my lovely!  You know how you want to live and how your family lives. In my opinion, I know that I could live with being careful with hot pans, crock pots or toasters, BUT could my family?  I don’t think I would sleep if I knew that a child or their babysitter could accidentally scorch my countertops!  One wrong move with a hot pan will have your investment become history!

Quartz is not a natural stone.  Be aware, some companies slyly call their materials by the names of the real deal.  For instance, I went to my favorite slab yard just yesterday and told the salesman that I was looking for 5-7 slabs of Calacatta Gold Marble that could be book-matched in a master bathroom shower and above a cooktop as a backsplash in a kitchen for a very lucky client.  He quickly took me for a walk down the rows and rows of slabs, turned a corner and pointed to a “Calacatta Gold” slab.  I took a look and told him that I was looking for real marble for a client.  He persisted and kept telling me that it was “Calacatta Gold.”  Luckily, for my client, I knew better and have been around long enough to know the difference, but the regular consumer out there might not have known the difference especially if they didn’t see the real thing next to the man-made quartz. The point is that as a consumer, you should always ask lots of questions and should do your homework before purchasing any countertop material, especially for your kitchen where most of the wear and tear will occur.  He took me down additional rows where we finally made our way to the real Calacatta Gold Marble slabs.  He then told me that they were already sold and he wouldn’t have any more in for another month.  Moral of the story?  He wanted to make a sale.  That’s it.  He wanted a sale of 5-7 slabs and was willing to allow me to purchase quartz when I asked for the real natural marble stone.  Do your homework!  Ask questions!  Consult with a designer or a knowledgeable contractor whom you trust.  Then and only then will you be educated enough to be able to make a good decision.  A Countertop purchase is a huge investment, and making an informed decision is the most important!
